In fact, it rained so much, a lake formed in the meadow.
(The seagulls had swum off by the time I got down to the bottom of the garden to take the pic!)

And then it rained...all flipping day. :(

The sun came out - lovely!
Incidentally, this photo was taken on my new flashy camera.

walking

I've recently become obsessed with vintage steel signs. View more here.
I went out scouting ghost signs and vintage steel signs yesterday in North Center. I think this is the oldest ghost sign I've found in Chicago. (Irving Park and Wolcott).

My internet research found this info on the company: Fairbank's Gold Dust Washing Powder - The Many Purpose Cleaner. The N. K. Fairbanks Soap Company produced numerous types of soap and cleaning products. The business started in 1897 and eventually folded in the 1930's. The Gold Dust products were represented by the Gold Dust Twins, two African-American children surrounded by gold coins. In fact the twins were one of the best known trademarks of the 19th century. Let the Twins Do Your Work was the tag line.

Friday, 16th May 2008

Here's a selection of vintage knitting patterns I've recently bought off eBay. They stimulate my creative and kitsch-loving synapses (does that even make sense?!).

Thursday, 15th May 2008

I find trying out new recipes fairly stimulating. This is Massaman Curry from the cookbook Ceri has lent me. Yummy. :)

Wednesday, 14th May 2008

For this month's theme, Christa suggests 'stimulated'. Hmmm - well, I can't say I find my stairs particularly 'stimulating' (apart from falling down them twice - on both occasions I was carrying a full laundry basket), but perhaps this particular angle is...from an aesthetic point of view, that is.

Tuesday, 13th May 2008

Okay, I admit I didn't take this pic - Ceri did - but it featured quite significantly in my day; her text (which featured this ghost sign 'by night') woke me up this morning, which was a good thing, because I had already slept through *both* my alarms. If she hadn't have sent it, I would have ended up even later for my morning's work at RCMG. Oops!

Apparently unrelated

I'm changing this format. I'm now just going to straight out blog about crap and possibly attach a photo if you are lucky. I've obviously lost all of my marbles...and it happened right here at a hardcore high school on Chicago's near west side. That's right...I'm working night school tonight. It's highly 'Welcome Back Kotter" except for Vinnie Barbarino and Horshack were quite innocent comparatively. What I can't understand about CPS schools is why they don't provide the necessities, as it were...no handsoap, no paper towels, you have to get an allotment of toilet paper before entering the stall (what if things don't go as planned?! what if you drop it on the filthy floor whilst hovering?). If we cannot provide for such basic needs, how can we provide an effective education that might 'stick'. I'm a huge proponent of the idea that our environments greatly influence our moods, achievement levels and productivity. If I'm constantly on the look out for the classroom mouse or worrying about what to do if I don't bring just the 'right' amount of toilet paper into the bathroom, then how can I focus on learning the uses of the pythagorean theorem or complete a character analysis of Hamlet? (let alone learn how to function as a productive member of society, but then that's not really the point of education in the U.S. is it?)The inequalities among the neighbourhood schools here are drastic. Some schools provide laptops for each student in a certain grade while others don't provide paper for making photocopies. I wonder if this could possibly be indicative of or a manifestation of our increasing fragmentation in society or the claims that the mediocrity of our education system is directly effecting the mediocrity of our economy. For example.

Well, I got sidetracked by helping students complete complex algebraic equations...and much to my amazement, it really is like riding a bike...

Amazing bank of cloud, as seen from London Road.

Sunday, 27th April 2008

Hmmmm, have lost the photo. It was of the aftermath of my dinner party. But it's gone. Perhaps I can recreate the scene? Fish pie with steamed broccoli and braised leeks, followed by lemon curd pudding. It was yum - but there's no longer any documentary evidence to prove it. :(
